Project Description

Bukmuk is a platform that provides a convenient book rental service, allowing parents and kids to explore a diverse selection of books without the need to buy them. After functioning for few years, they wanted to enchance their existing platform and develop a mobile app to for their users.

Apart from the logo, the entire brand identity, color scheme, and product UI were revamped and enhanced. The goal was to make the product easy to use for parents and young readers

  • Primary users: Large Fleet Owners (LFOs), Ops Managers

Design Process

Research & Planning

Research & Planning

The current platform has been running since past 5 yrs offline with a basic dashboard to keep track of books digitally. So it was critical to understanding the function of it especially the backend. Detailed discussions were held with the team and calls were undertaken with current users (parents) to identify existing challenges and user preferences. Key features were identified and outlined to work on.

Defining Persona

Defining Persona

Designing only for kids risks losing parental trust. Designing only for parents risks losing child engagement.

Bukmuk required balancing parental trust and control with childlike curiosity and delight.

Persona 1 - Parent (Decision Maker)

Kannika, 40 | Working Parent
She values education but struggles with time. She wants her child to read regularly without having to research, purchase, and manage physical books repeatedly.

Goals

• Build a reading habit

• Reduce screen-time guilt

• Avoid repeated book purchases

Design Lens

Clarity, trust, and ease of use.

“If the process is simple and my child enjoys the books, I’ll happily continue the

subscription.”

When I want my child to read more, I want easy access to age-appropriate books, so I feel confident I’m supporting their learning.

Trust | Control | Visibility

Persona 2 - Child (End User)

Ayansh, 8 | Curious Reader
A visual-first reader who enjoys visual, exciting stories. He loves Indian Mythology tales and books on famous leaders

Goals

• Read fun stories

• Choose books independently

Design Lens

Visual delight, simplicity, and encouragement.

“I like books with pictures and stories that don’t feel like homework.”

When I open Bukmuk,

I want to find fun books I can finish,

so reading feels exciting and rewarding.

Delight, autonomy, simplicity

Problem Statement

Parents want their children to read regularly, BUT
• Books are expensive and quickly outgrown
• Choosing age appropriate content is time-consuming
• Children lose interest easily

Children want:
• Fun, visual stories
• Freedom to choose
• Reading that doesn’t feel like homework

Competitor Analysis

The kids reading and book-lending ecosystem in India broadly falls into three categories:

  1. Logistics-led physical book libraries with app support

  2. App-first digital reading platforms

  3. Hybrid discovery platforms with limited habit systems

Most competitors solve access to books, but very few solve reading as a sustained habit especially in a dual-user context involving parents and children.

Bukmuk’s opportunity lies at this intersection.

Bukmuk’s opportunity lies at this intersection.

Most competitors either solve logistics or engagement. Very few solve habit formation across both parent and child users.

Bukmuk’s differentiation is treating the app as a behaviour system building trust for parents and motivation for children around physical books.

Wireframing

Wireframing

As the entire product was re-structured it was important to have detailed wireframes of each module for both web & app along with dashboard also.

While children are the end users, parents are the primary decision-makers and payers. This created a dual-user challenge: designing an experience that delights children while building trust, control, and convenience for parents.

Design & Developement

The existing website was completely revamped to improve usability and design consistency. Since the app was being introduced for the first time, it was designed from the ground up with a user-friendly interface, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for young readers and parents alike.

Onboarding & Profile Setup (Parent-Focused)

Child age, reading level, language preference selection
- Reduces parent anxiety around book selection
- Enables curated recommendations instead of open-ended browsing

Users receive a personalized homepage tailored to their favorite genres, featuring the latest and trending books. Additionally, they can explore blogs, upcoming events, and a referral program, enhancing their overall experience

This redesign intentionally focused less on visual novelty and more on systemic clarity. By identifying parents as the primary decision-makers and children as the emotional drivers, the product architecture was split into:

• A trust building, low effort parent experience
• A delight led, self driven child experience

Key design principles included:
• Designing for long term habits, not short term engagement
• Reducing parent cognitive load through curated books.
